Photo Chemistry Primer with James Hull
In November 2022, the Alternative Process Social hosted a comprehensive Photo Chemistry Primer led by James Hull. Known for his expertise in both digital and alternative processes, James took participants through the fundamental principles of photographic chemistry. This session was designed to give attendees a solid understanding of the chemical reactions that form the foundation of many alternative photographic techniques. To complement the live event, James also shared a valuable online resource for reference, which can be explored at PhotoChem.
Throughout the session, James broke down complex chemical processes into easy-to-understand explanations, guiding participants through the essentials of light-sensitive materials, developers, and fixers. He explained how these chemicals interact during the image-making process, focusing on how different combinations of materials can affect the final print’s tonality, texture, and stability. Whether discussing cyanotype or more advanced techniques like silver gelatin and palladium printing, James highlighted the importance of understanding the science behind the art.
The primer left attendees with a renewed appreciation for the role chemistry plays in photography, especially in alternative processes. Armed with the knowledge gained from the session and the supplementary online materials, many participants felt inspired to experiment with their own chemical formulas and explore new creative possibilities. James’s clear teaching and enthusiasm for the subject created an engaging environment that encouraged both beginners and seasoned photographers to dive deeper into the chemistry behind their craft.
