Cyanotype workshop with Peter Friedrichsen

On Saturday, November 25th, 2023, the Alternative Process Social (APS) hosted an exciting Cyanotype workshop led by Peter Friedrichsen at Daylight Studio in Leaside. This intimate 3.5-hour session welcomed a small group of six participants, allowing for hands-on learning and personal attention. The focus of the workshop was on creating cyanotype prints using both digital negatives and photograms, with Peter providing expert instruction on the techniques involved. Participants had the opportunity to create stunning Prussian blue prints while learning the fundamentals of this historic photographic process.

In preparation for the workshop, participants submitted two images in advance, which were converted into 5”x7” digital negatives by Peter. These negatives would serve as the foundation for creating cyanotype prints, offering an introduction to the technical aspects of making digital negatives for future projects. Peter shared detailed insights on the process, ensuring that attendees could confidently replicate the workflow on their own. A handout containing essential steps and resources was provided to guide participants in their cyanotype journey beyond the workshop.

The workshop space was thoughtfully set up with three complete stations, each equipped with UV exposure units, allowing for efficient and seamless printmaking. Under Peter’s guidance, participants explored the use of digital negatives as well as the more traditional method of creating photograms. In a follow-up post, APS will delve deeper into the art of photograms, adding further educational value to the workshop experience.

Throughout the afternoon, the small group setting encouraged collaborative learning and discussion. Peter’s patient instruction and deep understanding of the cyanotype process fostered a supportive environment, where participants could ask questions, experiment with materials, and refine their techniques. The blend of digital and hands-on approaches made this workshop especially appealing for both beginners and seasoned photographers looking to expand their skills.

By the end of the 3.5-hour session, participants walked away with their own handmade cyanotype prints and the knowledge needed to continue creating these vibrant blue images at home. With all materials provided and a wealth of information shared, the workshop was a valuable and enriching experience for everyone involved. The Alternative Process Social continues to offer opportunities like this to learn and explore historical photographic techniques in a welcoming, community-driven space.
