Tintype demonstration with Horst Herget

In May 2022, the Alternative Process Social hosted a captivating tintype photography demonstration led by renowned photographer Horst Herget. As a master of historical photographic techniques, Horst shared his deep knowledge and expertise with the community, offering an immersive experience into the world of tintype photography. The session was filled with anticipation as attendees gathered to witness the entire process, from preparing the plates to the final development of hauntingly beautiful images.

Horst began the demonstration by walking participants through the essential tools and chemicals required for creating tintypes, explaining each step in detail. He meticulously prepared the metal plates, applied the collodion solution, and sensitized them in a silver nitrate bath. As he captured images using his large-format camera, the excitement grew as the exposed plates were developed in real-time, revealing striking, high-contrast portraits that seemed to capture not only the subject but also the essence of the moment. The demonstration sparked many questions from participants, leading to engaging discussions about the technical and artistic aspects of tintype photography.

The session concluded with a reflection on the significance of alternative processes like tintype in today’s digital age. Horst emphasized the tactile and intentional nature of these methods, reminding us of the power in slowing down and connecting with the craft on a deeper level. The demonstration left participants inspired to explore tintype photography further, and many walked away with a newfound appreciation for the historical roots of the medium. It was a day filled with artistry, education, and a shared love for the photographic process.
